The Festival presents chamber music featuring the cello. The Los Angeles-based (and USC alumni) Calder Quartet will perform on three Quintet+ concerts with Giovanni Sollima, Antonio Lysy and Frans Helmerson. These programs also will feature solo cello performances by Ronald Leonard, Lawrence Lesser, and Jeffrey Solow.

Unique and versatile cello quintet, SAKURA, begins this evening concert with Bizet’s Carmen Fantasy. Cellist Ronald Leonard and pianist Bernadene Blaha then perform Boccherini’s Adagio and Allegro, followed by Barber’s Sonata in C minor, Op. 6. The concert concludes with the Calder Quartet and cellist Giovanni Sollima performing Boccherini’s Quintet in C major Op. 28, No. 4.

This concert begins with the SAKURA cello quintet performing madrigals by Dowland, Farmer, and Gesualdo. Cellist Laurence Lesser then tackles Bach’s Suite No. 5 in C minor, BWV 1011 (lute version). The concert concludes with the Calder Quartet and cellist Antonio Lysy performing Onslow’s Quintet No. 15 in C major Op. 48 (The Bullet).

SAKURA begins this evening concert with Wilson’s Lament in memory of Matthew Shepard. Cellist Jeffrey Solow and pianist Ayke Agus then perform Piatigorsky’s transcriptions of Haydn’s Divertimento in D major, Schubert’s Introduction, Theme and Variations, Op. 82, No. 2, and Weber’s Sonata in A major, Op. 10b, No. 5. The concert concludes with the Calder Quartet and cellist Frans Helmerson performing two movements of Taneyev’s String Quintet in G major, Op. 14.
