Audiences will enjoy the opportunity of hearing master cellists in recital: Frans Helmerson and Truls Mørk; Sol Gabetta and David Geringas; and Matt Haimovitz and Mischa Maisky. Also featured will be an evening of rare twentieth-century works – Concerto for Cello and Wind Instruments (1925) by Jacques Ibert with soloist Rafael Wallfisch; Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra (1980) by Friedrich Gulda with soloist Li-Wei Qin; and Canticle of the Sun (1997) by Sofia Gubaidulina for cello, chamber choir and percussion, with soloist David Geringas, all led by conductor Uriel Segal.

Cellist Frans Helmerson and pianist Kevin Fitz-Gerald open the first Evening Recital with Debussy’s Sonate for Cello and Piano, and then continue with Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 19. After intermission, cellist Truls Mørk and pianist Bernadene Blaha, perform Grieg’s Intermezzo, EG115, followed by Sibelius’s Romance and Religioso, Op. 78, Nos. 2 and 3, and Grieg’s Sonata in A minor, Op. 36.

Cellist Sol Gabetta and pianist Kevin Fitz-Gerald open the second Evening Recital with Chopin’s Sonata in G minor, Op. 65 and his Grand Duo Concertant, Op. 16a. After intermission, cellist David Geringas and pianist Rina Dokshitsky, perform Schnittke’s Cello Sonata No. 1. Geringas then performs Vasks’s Das Buch for Cello Solo and is joined by the Calder Quartet for Šenderovas’s David’s Song and Tchaikovsky’s Andante cantabile.

Soloists David Geringas, Li-Wei Qin, and Raphael Wallfisch will join conductor Uriel Segal and the USC Thornton Chamber Singers and Wind Ensemble for a performance of Ibert’s Concerto for Cello and Wind Instruments (Wallfisch), Gulda’s Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra (Qin), and Sofia Gubaidulina’s Canticle of the Sun for Cello, Chamber Choir and Percussion (Geringas).

Cellist Matt Haimovitz and pianist Christopher O’Riley open this Evening Recital with Glass’s The Orchard, followed by Radiohead’s Pyramid Song, Kino’s Kukushka, and Prokofiev’s Sonata in C major for Cello and Piano, Op. 119. After intermission, cellist Mischa Maisky and pianist Lily Maisky will perform Webern’s Two Pieces and Three Little Pieces, Op. 11, followed by two movements from Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps and Britten’s Sonata in C major, Op. 65.
